Question          I was wondering if you can tell me whether a Christian can “have a demon” or be “demonized”?

Answer          Let me first congratulate you on using the proper terms for this question! Unfortunately, the Greek words that refer to this demonic condition have often been incorrectly translated using the word “possessed” which in English implies demonic “ownership”. The concept of “ownership” is not in the Greek and so the word “possessed” should not be used. The correct translation should use one of the following equivalent phrases: to “have” a demon, to be “in” a demon, or to be “demonized”.

With respect to your question, I have read from a good source that it may be impossible to prove through Scripture whether a Christian can or cannot “have” a demon (see Dickason, C. Fred, Demon Possession and the Christian. Chicago, IL: Moody Press, 1987). We can’t tell for sure if any of the folks that Jesus (or the disciples) cast demons out of were really “Christians” - even though many attended synagogues and appeared to be faithful  (for example, the “daughter of Abraham” who was bound by a demon for 18 years - Luke 13:16). However, it seems safe to say that the possibility of a Christian having a demon is not out of the question. From this point, I would suggest that you look to church history and Christian experience to explore this question further. Early church documents routinely mention that Christians should receive “deliverance from evil spirits” prior to baptism, and there seems to be a ton of historical and experiential evidence that deliverance has been (and should be) a significant part of our Christian experience. There are many great books available on this topic (see other parts of the KT site), but here are some of my personal favorites:
